Emergency Water Damage Guide: What to Do Next

Provided by Countryside Restorations Inc.

Finding water where it shouldn’t be is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Whether it’s a burst pipe, a failing water heater, or a natural flood, immediate action is the difference between a simple dry-out and a costly reconstruction.

Follow this professional protocol to protect your property and your family.

Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Actions

Your safety is more important than your property. Before you begin, ensure the environment is stable.

  • Kill the Power: If water has reached floor outlets or is dripping from ceiling fixtures, do not enter the room. Turn off the electricity at the main breaker.
  • Stop the Source: If the flooding is caused by a pipe burst or appliance failure, turn off the main water shut-off valve immediately.
  • Identify the Water Type:
    • Clean Water: Pipes, rain, or snow. Safe to handle.
    • Grey Water: Sump pump failures or dishwasher leaks. Use caution.
    • Black Water: Sewage or rising river water. Stop. This contains pathogens. Vacate the area and call Countryside Restorations Inc. immediately.

Phase 2: Protection & Documentation

Once the scene is safe, focus on minimizing “secondary damage”—the damage that happens in the hours after the initial leak.

1. Document Everything

Before you move anything, take high-resolution photos and videos. Your insurance adjuster will need these to verify the extent of the loss. Capture the source of the water and all affected rooms. At Countryside Restorations, we will aid in the documentation process.

2. The “Foil & Block” Technique

Water travels up furniture legs through “wicking.” Place aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or wooden blocks under the legs of all furniture in the affected area to prevent permanent staining and wood rot. There is still a possibility that the items may already be damaged beyond saving; however, we still recommend doing this in the chance it can be saved.

3. Clear the Floor

Remove any items that contain dyes or inks, such as:

  • Area rugs
  • Books and magazines
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Colored clothing
  • Note: These items will bleed permanent stains into your carpet or hardwood if left wet.

Phase 3: What Countryside Restorations Inc. Does for You

When our team arrives, we implement a Scientific Drying Strategy. Drying a home is more than just “sucking up water”—it’s about controlling the environment.

Our 5-Step Restoration Process

  1. Professional Extraction: We use industrial-grade pumps and vacuums to remove the bulk of the standing water.
  2. Infrared Moisture Mapping: We use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture trapped behind “dry” walls or under floorboards.
  3. Structural Stabilization: We deploy LGR (Low Grain Refrigerant) Dehumidifiers and high-velocity air movers to pull moisture out of the building materials.
  4. Antimicrobial Sanitization: We apply hospital-grade disinfectants to prevent mold, mildew, and bacteria from colonizing.
  5. Monitoring: We return daily to take moisture readings, ensuring every layer of your home is bone-dry before we pull our equipment.

Important: What NOT to Do

  • DO NOT use a standard household vacuum to remove water. It is an electrical hazard and can ruin the machine.
  • DO NOT turn on the HVAC system if you suspect mold or if the water damage is extensive; this can spread contaminants through your ductwork.
  • DO NOT wait to call. Mold begins to germinate in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
